This article will guide you through the steps required to start using Bucknell University Remote Labs (VMware Horizon).  You can access VMware Horizon either through your browser or a client from your own desktop. The first 11 steps apply to any applications on VMware Horizon, while the remaining steps are specific to Minitab.  Minitab is an example of an application you may have access to.

Please note that graphics-intensive applications that are hosted through VMware Horizon (e.g., SolidWorks, ArcGIS) will only be accessible via the desktop client.

  1. Go to, and click on “Install VMware Horizon Client”.
  2. You will then be taken to the following webpage. Under “VMware Horizon Client for Windows”, click on “Go to Downloads”.
  3. Next, click on “Download”, as shown in the following screenshot:
  4. Once the download has finished, run the client installer. If you are using Chrome or Firefox, click on the installer to run it. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will be prompted automatically to run the installer.
  5. After you have read the Privacy Agreement and License Terms, click “Agree & Install”.
  6. Then, click “Finish”.
  7. If you have any unsaved work, be sure to save it before clicking “Restart Now”. Remember that not all applications will prompt you automatically.
  8. After your computer has restarted and you have logged back in, click on the Windows icon in the bottom left of your screen to open the Start menu. Then, scroll down on the list of applications, and click on “VMware Horizon Client”.
  9. In the VMware Horizon Client, click on “New Server”, or double-click “Add Server”.
  10. In the text field, enter “”, and click “Connect”.
  11. Then, enter your Bucknell username (e.g., xyz012) and password, and click “Login”.
  12. Once you have been authenticated, double-click on the “Minitab” application.
  13. A Minitab session will open, as well as a VMware Horizon Client window that asks for your permission to share local files. Be sure to click “Allow” at this step so that you can save to your local desktop or netspace folder.
  14. You are now ready to begin using Minitab!

Note: if you want to open a Minitab file (i.e., with the .MPJ file extension), you will need to open the VMware Horizon Client, then open Minitab, and go to File > Open.

Note: You can save files locally (i.e., to your Desktop), but they will be hidden. If you save to your server space, however, you will see two discrete items that comprise your Minitab file:
