What is on the Bucknell image that is on my Bison Laptop?
  Question

What is on the Bucknell image that is on my Bison Laptop?

  Answer

Your Bison Laptop comes with a lot of pre-installed and pre-configured software. Some of it is easy to figure out, like Firefox and Internet Explorer. Here is an explanation of everything that we have put on your laptop (and note that we have gotten rid of all of the demo/free/trial software stuff that normally comes on a computer when you buy it!):

Free software

  • iTunes
  • Firefox - configured with Bucknell home page and bookmarks
  • AIM
  • Flash - player for IE and Firefox
  • Java
  • Acrobat Reader

BU Installed Services and Utilities

  • BU network drives - an easy way to access all of your Bucknell network drives when on campus or on the VPN
  • Campus Alert Monitor - a quick way to find out about campus outages and alerts, right on your desktop
  • VPN (Virtual Private Network) - a secure way for you to utilize all of Bucknell's resources from off campus
  • Setup BU Printers - a quick way to print to selected lab computers from your laptop over wireless
  • Setup BU Wireless - our wireless is encrypted, but this utility will easily allow you to set it up yourself
  • Intel ProSet Wireless - you have Intel's wireless adaptor, which can be managed by its own utility (preconfigured for Bucknell)

Malware Tools
  • Sophos AntiVirus - Bucknell's licensed and pre-configured enterprise edition of Sophos Anti-Virus
  • CCleaner - quickly cleans your computer of temporary internet files
  • Spyware Blaster - finds and removes malware, and immunizes your computer against future infections

Open Mind - software which allows you to quickly create timelines, brainstorming sessions, agendas, etc. Used in some Bucknell classes.

Luna Insight Image Database - Bucknell-licensed database software used in some classes

Roxio Creator 9 - highly rated software for creating and burning data and music CDs and DVDs

Power DVD DX7 - DVD playing software

SSH Secure Shell - a secure method of file transfer

Thunderbird email setup - Bucknell's pre-configured installer for setting up Thunderbird, Mozilla's top-rated open source full-featured email client

If you have any questions about any of this software, call us at 570-577-7777, email us at  bisonlaptop@bucknell.edu or try us on IM at BucknellIT.
